How much do you value a highly-organized army? Usually, I just train a bunch of Musketeers, sometimes accompanied by artillery or a counter to the enemy's units, and then raze their town.

I do remember one game, though, where I created "divisions" of soldiers broken down into "platoons". Each division had a set number of healers, infantry, anti-cavalry, and artillery. I organized this via "grouping", and it worked well.

When possible I make an army of balanced hand infantry and infantry, then I add a few artillery units, mainly in this proportion:

20 Hand Infantry, 20 Heavy Infantry or any equivalent of a musketeer and 2-5 Falconets

It depends largely on the civ I'm playing and against who I'm playing, but normally I amass UU + artillery, or better yet, mercenaries + artillery.

I never really liked unique units. Here's my breakdown:
British
- Longbowmen aren't justifiable in my army. Rockets are very nice artillery pieces.

French
- Cuirassiers? They kick butt, I just don't use cavalry much. If I need cavalry, I like them.

Spanish
- Ugh, I hate them. However, I have grown a fondness for the Royal Guard Rodelero.

Dutch
- Fluyts are replacement, so I use them. As for the other stuff.... Ruyters are nice enough, though I only use Dragoons for raiding runs.

Germans
- I LOVE them. Uhlans are very nice, as are Doppelsonders. War Wagons are the perfect weapon.

Russians
- Strelets suck. Cavalry Archers suck. Oprichniks are a force to be reckoned with: sometimes, I base my entire army around them.

Ottomans
- All of their soldiers are good, except for Cavalry Archers and "Grand Bombards". The attack-to-reload ratio isn't good in comparison to Heavy Cannon.

Portuguese
- Cassadores are a decent force. I can't remember their other units.

I would do this, but rather than get them killed, I would send them to aid my allies in an attack. In fact, I have a habit of sending men to guard my main base if they prove themselves (accomplish alot without dying)

I also agree with President Washington 99%. except I HATE the German units XD

That's what I did when I was 6 lol Devil

I use groupings, put units of the same type together usually in a round number, and put the units in real battle formation when fighting. I also put pikes vs cav, etc., ofc

No Bazz, that is too time consuming. They are bread to die at my hand, and so they will lol

I think many of the unique units are nice. Without them, this game would lack a lot of flavour. It also gives you the opportunity to use different strategies with different nations.

With the imperial upgrade card, longbows are really good if you can keep them out of close combat, much die to their high rate of fire.

Lancers are just astounding vs infantry if you can get the right cards.

Doppensoldners... what do I have to say?

Longbowmen only in a colonial age army, but I quickly replace them with musketeers.

Nobody can deny the usefulness and might of the cuirassier.

Unlike you, I like spanish, their royal guards are amazingly good.

I don't use dutch often.

I agree with germans.

I don't use Russians often.

Abus guns are amazingly good

Cassadors are good, organ guns are good as well.

@ SAOL: IV had a habit of caring for my men since I was young Mr. Green I would avoid casualties whenever possible, and tried to keep my men alive for as long as possible. In fact, I would make an "imaginary" veterancy system, which later blew my mind when it began to be implemented in RTS games today Surprised

In fact6, I remember losing once, but I took pride in the fact that I held off the enemy with the small force that my dwindling economy could provide and kept them alive to the end

"Veterancy"?

On that note....
has anybody ever, even as a small child, cried for your casualties or felt actual pity when your armies/civilians were mowed down in a battle?

It never happened to me

I once lost in AOE 2 when I was a kid, but I fought so well and the game was so challenging, that I actually felt good after the game (I played in either expert or hard for the first time), almost like if I had won.
