I don't even use a main army. I simply bring in a small squad of mortars with riflemen guards. That usually defeats the enemy. Or another tactic of mine is to use a large army to rush into the enemy town after my mortars have crushed all the buildings that can damage my men.

i was always extremely organized with my portuguese (so manny cassadores to halberders to organs) but now i play aztec in which im really messy. People seem to only rush with Aztec, but i actually have developed a halfway decent turtling strat. I essentially scramble to survive to age iv, then i get ten priests and 15 villagers on the war pit and start spawning skull warriors every 9.2 secs. those units can tear down anything

I play as the American's most of the time and use a combo of 10 Culverins and 10 Gatling Guns with rest a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 split between Marines, Hussars, and Dragoons. The Culverins clean up any artillery (especially useful when the AI does cannon spamming), Gatling Guns handle the infantry, and Dragoons take out cav while the marines and hussars provide support.

If you can engage the enemy in a choke point you can wipe out anything they send at you with only 2-6 casualties of your own depending on the amount of micromanaging you do.

Outta curiosity, what kind of strategies would you employ against someone who plays French and uses almost solely Cuirassiers? I have a friend I play LAN treaty games with and that is all he will use, with the occasional Falconets.. I can damage him pretty bad using Dragoons (sometimes using all Dragoons) but Cuirassiers in the Imperial Age have too high of HP and can basically be trained instantly so when I attack I barely even dent his defenses and military, not to mention his economy

Depends on the civ obviously, with USA the solution obviously is spam gatling guns, with USA the solution always is spam gatling guns...

That is why french are over powered. Spamming is usually not a good idea because a well all round army can be much more flexible.

Hmm, never really noticed if Gatling Guns had a significant effect on Cavalry or not, just knew they pwn'd infantry and that was good enough for me lol. Guess its worth a shot. What about with other Civs? American is my main Civ but I'll also play as Prussia, British, and Germans from time to time. Any idea of a strategy that would be effective against Cuirassiers? I've heard the Portuguese have HC card(s) that make their dragoons fairly effective but I hate over committing to countering one type of unit and left vulnerable to anything else. Not to mention I think it would require a level 40 HC and thus time..

And I agree about the french being overpowered. Had to test them out for myself and you can systematically take out 6 expert AI by yourself without denting your economy or risking losing a building with one stable and 2-3 cavalry training time upgrades.. Instant Super cav is impossible to counter from what i can tell Sad

Sorry for typing so much, insomnia gives you a lot of time to think Razz

Let's see, for germans dopplesoldners are the best unit in game to counter cuirassiers, so that's no problem.
In prussia you could try the teutonic knights or the totenkopf hussars, seee wich one's more effective.
With the british, well, good luck. Mr. Green

Portuguese : cassador with organ gun, if they are without organ, they are sucks
French : coureur des bois Devil
Ottoman : janissary, without anything else...
Russian : strelet, they are bad Neutral
German : czapka, as they are free lol
Japan : ashigaru
China : I use all, but I like flying crow, and their monk
India : just sepoy and gurkha, elephant will ate my population

and yes, I often use a counter attack and/or doom in one minutes. Sometimes attacking alike computer ai Wink

I once lost in AOE 2 when I was a kid, but I fought so well and the game was so challenging, that I actually felt good after the game (I played in either expert or hard for the first time), almost like if I had won.

Same thing here! Smile

I remember the first scenario from the Barbarossa campaign, in Aoe2. I was 6 or 7 back then, and it was one of my first fights in Aoe ever. I remember you had like 6 enemies around you, and you got to steal some relics from them. I didn't got the relics, but I remember that I hold the enemies at bay for like 2-3 hours, time in which I built a beautiful town and huge walls. winking When my resources dwindled and the enemies were breaching my walls, I didn't give up, and fought to the last Teutonic Knight. I lsot the game, but I understood he game's mechanics and felt in love with it, and also had a lot lot of fun Smile

Oh yeah, I remember that map, you started with enemies by all sides and they swarmed you in little time.
I remember the trick to defeat that map was that you started an age above them, so if you attacked early and fast, you could take down an enemy or 2 and make things more manageable, oh and also, the mongols were OP on that map.

Is he the one that made Age of Chivalry? OR it's another mod?
