New Version

Hello everyone, as we care about what the community has to say Mr. Green , Tilanus and I would like to share this new experience with you to gather your reactions. We replaced the firing sounds in the game by more punchy ones.
Therefore, if some people would like to test it and post feedback, it would be highly appreciated.

The files can be found at this address :

http://www.ne.elpea.net/downloads/NEfiringsounds.rar
V2 :
http://www.sendspace.com/file/hacegs

Changelog :
->Tried a tweak on the pistol sounds.

To install, just unrar the folder and put its content into Disk / Program Files (or Programs for vista and seven) / Microsoft Games / Age of Empires III / Sound /

If someone wants to install it on mac : open finder then applications, find Age of Empires III, click right, show contents, contents, resources, GameData, and finally Sound.

This operation won't overwrite any file. If you want to uninstall the sounds, just delete them from this location. Remember there is 36 files altogether.

What's to be tested :
Arrow Settler's and arquebusier's firing sound.
Arrow Heavy infantry's firing sound (musketeer for instance)
Arrow Light infantry's firing sound (skirmisher for instance)
Arrow Pistol's firing sound (dragoon for instance)
Arrow Arrows' firing[/url]

My reactions:

Arrow sounds like the arrows thrown by Warcraft3 units, I don't know if that's good or bad, but it was funny to note.

Musketeer sounds kind of too loud for ingame.

Pistol would sound better without the echo, but that's just my opinion.

I liked the rifle sounds, specially 1 & 6.

Settler gun sounds too powerful to be, well, a settler gun, half of them sound like cannons actually. lol

Those are my opinions.

I know this sounds mean, but: You're discussing only with Yomgui. Mr. Green I certainly won't change my opinion about them, cause I think they're great!

btw: The "Settler Gun Sounds" are just a technical description for all PRIMITIVE FIREARMS and it's their DUTY to be LOUD. Okay?! Wink

These fire sounds can never be too loud. If you think so then I guess you never heard a real musket firing.

I have no idea if Yomgui included other Arrow sounds than mine. I used AoE2 arrow sounds. Without some volume altering in the soundsets.xml these sounds will be too quiet for most of you. However, I think in quality the AoE2 sounds are just too good for not using them. Wink

The Echo is much more realistic, but it takes indeed some time to get used to them. It took me a while too. Smile

I will totally try this on Friday.

Since there is a mass of firing sounds, I really do think they can become too loud. The sounds mustn't only work individually, but also en mass. To loud or... I don't know how to put it... large, sounds with a lot of integrity can become a strain in the long run.

I do not think sounds are too loud. They have the same db as the normal ones. I will try to find an issue to the echo problem, but I am not sure it will give something correct.

I could also code the Polish ETW voices and see what they sound like in game.

I don't think the echo is that wrong, it's indeed weird having an echo in open terrain, but that's all. If we remove it, I can live with that. Smile

@SAOL - What I meant was that the sound of a real musket is too loud to everyone by nature. And they're not that loud in game that someone would escape with his screen from battles just because the musket sounds are so loud.. ^^

Are you scared of your own vocie? lol

And yes, I haven't heard a musket fired in real life, I'd be actually surpised if someone here has.

But the problem with loud sounds, as SAOL said above, is that when used en masse could be to annoying for the game to be enjoyable, but then again, sound can be fixed in the very same game, so that shouldn't be a problem really. Smile

Hai Yomgui! I'm new usah! Hello forum! Sorry for my bad inglisch, I'm deutsch!

I tested sounds!! Sound very nice!!!111

I noticed something: We should try to differentiate them more clearly, although it might not be bad either to have some kind of spongy gradation.

I want you to know that I registered on the forum just so i could give feedback Razz

I like the new sounds a lot more than the standard ones. They are richer if that makes any sense, and are more real sounding to me. ... In fact if it would work, and its ok with you, I'd like to replace the sounds on the plain AOE 3 games with yours (have the game installed twice)

And to all who are complaining that the villagers muskets sound like cannons, the muskets back then had much larger rounds. The "Brown Bess" musket was a .75 cal (~20 mm for you non-US folk) gun so that counts as a cannon yes? On a personal note having gone deer hunting with one, they are louder than f**k and will literally knock the animal down like it got hit by a truck.

Just played a match with these new sounds:

Some issues lol

1. Rifle sounds way too much like musket sounds. The original sounds for a musket was a sharp crack, and rifle was a dull thump. These are too much alike in this tweak.

2. Pistol sounds too "weak." I don't know how to explain it, but I feel like the dragoons lose their appeal when it comes to shooting hussars. Though they STILL tear through artillery Devil

3. The villager's gun (blunderbuss) was a shotgun-like muzzle-loading firearm. In this game, it sounds like a matchlock rifle. Maybe a more "shotgunny" sound?

Overall, great tweak. Its good to hear a change of sound as you strelet rush Mr. Green

Now that I've tried it, I can with certainty say I like it.
