Bashi Bazouks will be Ottoman Militia troops.

@Smorley_7: I see your point, but I don't share the interpretation. The Nizams were regarded elite from a more modern military point of view, because they increased the military capabilities of the Ottomans for infantry while Janissaries were representatives of an old, archaic way of fighting that could not compete anymore with other European infantry armies.

Janissaries were the infantry elite until the Nizam-i-cedid appeared. The fact that they were in large parts rivals seems not so unusual to me. Rivalry among corpses existed in all armies. It's also a natural and logical transformation process in any army that an archaic elite once gets replaced by a newer one. The historical mark for that transformation is the point when the revolt of the Janissaries has been successfully put down by the Nizam-i-cedid.

The definition of an elite status is nothing that lasts forever. Elite was already interpreted differently by the Ottoman sultan when he decided for Nizam-i-cedid in exchange for the outdated Janissaries. This development is quite linear, especially because it was inevitable to reform the army in case the Ottomans wanted to regain military potency. So, that way a RG upgrade looks good to me.

I'm firmly against pumping up civs with UUs and unique mechanics. The Ottoman civ always was and will still be one of the most unique civs to play. Wink

The ottomans are pretty unique, but its hard to play them in anything but rush. Perhaps bashi bazouks would be a decent hand infantry unit, but it still doesn't serve the crisis of them lacking a good hand infantry unit, though I don't know if that is needed (Janissaries are pretty good in hand conflict).

On a different note, perhaps in the next update there could be a map of europe, and natives are in each area that the natives are from. And the players are stationed in the areas of capitals regardless to their civ (so, prussian player can be stationed in paris, russian player can be stationed in moscow, and italian player can be stationed in madrid)
dont know if that is a good idea, but it is a good suggestion that might make the game a bit better.

Yeah, I guess your right. Makes a lot more sense, actually. Still a bit odd for a RG, portraying them as superior troops simply for adopting western tactics. But I digress, I see your point.

That would become a ridiculously crammed version of Eurpoe.

@roy: we actually plan on including some additional infantry units for the Ottomans.

@Janissaries:
While upgrading Jans to Nics is probably the easiest solution without being largely inaccurate(they did replace them afterall). It's far from the only solution. This still may be implemented differently. I however support it, as it's simple, ok with history, reduces the unit count, does not need special fancy mechanics and prevents questions like "how do we get the NICs?!"
As Tilanus said, the Ottomans already are awfully unique, Vanilla Ottomans are on one level of uniqueness as most NE civs, special villager production + main units are unique, utilize two very uncommon units(Cav archers+Grenadiers). The Ottomans will get some more units to play with in NE, some of them being unique others shared with few civs. As it is we struggle to keep them on one level of uniqueness with other civs. Especially with the cooperation with "the ottoman mod" there is no danger at all that the Ottomans will be "not unique enough".
