Heyahodihoo!

I was always annoyed to start AoE3 and then the Scenario Editor to find some suitable models for my next unit. So, I thought it'd be a good idea to make a library! Banana!

Idea
Wait, you're not euphoric? ;sad; You should! The plan is to gather screenshots of all usable models of units and add useful data to them (i.e. if the mesh shows up in GrannyViewer or if the unit has a hat bone). This might be even extended to textures, which seems even more useful to me as you mostly want to know:
  • How does the playercolour work in this texture? (which parts of a texture can have PC?)
  • Which texture is compatible in view of structure? ("UV class")
  • How difficult is the structure to use? ("UV difficulty"; i.e. chaotic TWC textures vs. easy Vanilla textures)

Platforms
I think this GrannyLib(rary) would be a very useful tool for all modders. I've been wondering how to achieve the best level of mutual collaboration. Which platform would suggest for it?

I think it should be downloadable and extendable by everyone. I thought a table might be a good type, maybe a simple HTML page, where tables also allow images? I've also wondered if we should host this table in any of the AoE3 wikis.

Opinions please!

I didn't know you would in context of an ol' granny rather prefer associating "Lib" with a sexually focused term like Libido as opposed to Library. I really didn't know you have that very special sexual preference! lol

Well it appeared that you were eager to make clear that it's a library rather than ...

My personal preference does not enter into it Topmodel

I've been posting this thread on the WotTA forum too. I'm kind of irritated that the WotTA version turns out to be more productive than this one. Devil

Indeed, a libido wouldn't be a useful tool for modders, it'd keep them away from modding, which is a baaad bad thing! winking

For the people who don't read the WotTA forum:

peugeot407 has made this example:

The size was criticized and that real text would be better than text being a part of an image due to the fact that you can search and sort real text. However, the actual way of screening a unit like this is the current consensus. A smaller version (190x150) would look like this:

We're now thinking about platforms that support table-like, technically sortable structures and allow collaboration. We're also thinking about the security aspect as we don't want anyone random to mess up code.

I'm still heading to a HTML file with a separate editor interface and an output file, others suggested tumblr and Google Docs is not a real favorite because the combination of images and tables is suboptimal.

Okay there,

I spend my evening (and night) on coding a decent, very compact layout for the GrannyLib. You can check it out here:
http://www.ne.elpea.net/grannylib/GrannyLib.html

Some other images would be good to see how it looks like with different images. B)

If you face any odd errors with the layout, please make a screen and tell me your screen resolution and your browser (incl. version). The page is optimized for Firefox and Chrome. Also, any suggestions regarding the setup of the layout would be greatly appreciated!

For example: Which way of showing civ flag and game icon do you prefer?

Ow, and don't mind the "(Age2)", it's for testing purposes only. Wink

The good things about an HTML page are:
  • The access is easy as no registration is needed. It's open for anyone.
  • The technology is super basic, all you need is a browser, no flash player or any other superflous gimmicks
  • HTML Code isn't that hard to write/understand/modify - it can easily be updated
  • And of course, it's all open-source. Everyone can download the source code and continue/modify the Lib if necessary.

Further procedure
I thought about different concepts on how to easily make collaboration possible while still maintaining enough safety and control. In the end I thought it's easiest if everyone can contribute indirectly through a form or some sort of fill pattern/code generator and the coding/adding would be done by me.

I haven't found a shape for contributions yet, but I think I'll somehow be able to provide a simple interface, which you'll just fill out and generate the code via click. I can then simply copy&paste the table code to the HTML page.

So the contribution part would be a lil passive, because it requires a supervisor, but it's safer and completely avoids any type of trolling. Also, with the right form, the coding will be automized and only quick fixes and spell checking are necessary. For making correct contributions a small tutorial would then be needed (i.e. how to make the correct pics/prodive correct data). :retarded:

In view of the administrative supervisors it may be good to rotate between selected Councillors. This however, would then again require access through any sort of account. So ... not sure about this yet, but I think it's a cool idea!

Tell me what you think! ^^

Not to be annoying but the path you put for the crossbowman's texture in grannylib is incorrect. You put :units\infantry_ranged\crossbowman\crossbow_...etc
when it is:
units\infantry_ranged\crossbow\crossbow_...etc

But I really like the idea of the granny lib. I think it will be very useful.

Is this program finished to download it?
Also is this a new kind of texture technique or just to show textures on models?

Sorry i'm not following the news about the GrannyLib on other forums..
