PostPosted: Tue Dec 08, 2015 8:00 pm    Post subject: Nice period music with open licence

I like when RTS games have the mood of the period. I used to play period music in the background, so I thought: why shouldn't I give a list of nice pieces for others to try? The nice thing is all of the pieces listed below use open licence (if the devs would like to use any of them, they are free to do so). All of the pieces are Baroque, I have a separate list of Classical pieces coming in the next post.

A.L. Vivaldi - Concerto for 2 Cellos in G minor, RV 531: has impressive beginning, but get's a bit blunt in the middle.
A.L. Vivaldi - Concerto for 2 Violins in A minor, RV 522: is a bit too slow, but has a great feeling of uncertainty, would fit the beginning of random map matches.
J.S. Bach - Violin Sonata in B minor, BWV 1014: Allegro (IV.) is a very lively piece with a lot happening (possibly too much for a soundtrack piece).
J.S.Bach - English Suite no. 1, BWV 806: I like this suite very much, it's uplifting and well-planned.
G.P. Telemann - Sonata in A minor: Spirituoso (II.) is very good and Vivace (IV.) is short and vivid. The recording would have to have the applause cut off.
G.P. Telemann - Concerto for Recorder and Viola da Gamba, TWV 52a1: I love Viola da Gamba, paired with recorder it has very ancient feeling - both instruments fell out of use in mid-18th century.
F. Couperin - La Favorite: is very French in style and isn't too long. It's also a marvellous and climatic showcase of harpsichord possibilities.
G.F. Händel - Aria in G minor, HWV 467: it's shorter than reading this description would be. Check yourselves.
G. Frescobaldi - Canzoni I e II: they are short and extremely climatic, I know they may not fit the AoE mood, but they are incredible.
D. Buxtehude - Canzonetta, BuxWV 225: impressive small organ work.

D-P, but I think a proper orchestration of Buxtehude's Canzonetta would make a nice theme. What do you think?

Ah, another music chat with Pawelec! Mr. Green I think you remember my specifications regarding game music and specifically the NE theme. The title music is not open for debate, but what we can talk about is the game playlist. I'm a bit in a hurry, so I'm not sure what I revealed in the last public music-related discussion about my music plans for NE.

I've heard most of these tracks and I really like some of them (especially Vivaldi is a great choice for NE). I remember playing ETW to classical music created a fantastic immersion, so you can be certain I'm motivated to do something about it. An alternative, maybe even switchable playlist with free, wisely chosen classical recordings would be nice for sure.

If you bump this thread I can have a closer look on the weekend on NE music plans.

I'd like to point out that, since all the composers of the music of the Napoleonic Era or earlier have passed away at least 75 years ago, all their music is in the public domain.

Specific performances might be a different issue, though. I can't remember off the top of my head the duration of copyright protection for recorded performances in my country, and either way it's no good since you'll probably want to go with US or European law on that regard. But this is an easier issue to resolve – you either find an old enough recording, or you make a recording of your own (with audio software, unless you can gather ten or fifteen friends that know how to play orchestra instruments lol )

I cannot recall revealing anything recently, so now I'm really curious. Does that mean someone is working on the title theme or is it still at the concept stage?

I'll search for more quality performances with open licences, Vivaldi has many awesome pieces, but I cannot find free recordings of them.

A slight bump, because I found a mod adding Classical pieces to Europa Universalis IV and I think the selection is nice. The recordings seem to be in public domain.

I added loads of Baroque music when I used to mod this in my childhood - the Bach Harpsichord concertos fit perfectly, (well moreso with ETW battles!) As does Herr, unser Herscher from the John's Passion. My favourite was using Mexican 17th Century music though - fits the scene quite well

Francesco, are the pieces in your own playlist public domain? And could you post the whole playlist? Mr. Green

Frederick II the Great wrote very decent, lively flute concertos:

It would be hard to find more Prussian music than written by the king of Prussia lol

Hm. That means it could be enabled via tech, so nation-specific would be possible as well.

What I always wanted to do was to include terrain-dependent ambient sounds, but it doesn't seem very possible as I'd like to link sounds to the terrains, not make units which emit the sounds.

unfortunately peoples labeld India part of Arabian or middle eastern civi culture that is terrible wrong .
