AoE3-related things you should know about in GIMP are:
  • Layer organization
  • Working with Alpha channels
  • Transparency (like for the borders of techs, portraits and such)
  • Material effects (called "Blending Options" in PS, is mostly a used to correct colours, add texture patterns, contures and all types of glows)
  • Selection techniques/Masks (important to select the right parts [many ppl mess that up already]; masks are not a must, but are quite helpful in terms of layer organization)

In principle you have to do the same work as in PS, but apply the work flow on GIMP instead.

So, yeah, I recommend you to check these things out. Simply google for tutorials and look for a GIMP tutorial database. Wink
