I usually mkae balanced armies of hand infantry, musketeers or their equals, and 3 to 5 falconets or their equals on all my usual three armies, the last of those having in addition 3 or 4 mortars

I like sieges. And since Austria can't hold off a large enemy army, they have to. U can take out outposts, barracks, stables and saloons and last the tc. Chase down the survivors!

Massing 150 petards might work vs AI, I dont think it would work well against any decent player online. Plus, I believe there is no civ with Instant petards so to say, so its time consuming, and plus getting there...etc.... Just send some cav all over, and the petards are done. Not a good idea imho.

But I can tell what did work for me in online games, if you use the Swiss, and you can get like 30+ sappers, in stealth, can be quite devastating. Just make sure you do that before the enemy get the Spies button.

And as for Austria, what I have said before, and what I hear enough in this thread. The coolest thing about them is the grenzer cloning.

About the Inhaber card, well I suggest you try it a couple of times. Its extremely useful for me, because of the aging process and so...just need to keep 5 -10 on gold, and thats it, if you plan no too use cannons. I usually keep 50+ villies on food, 25 on wood, fac on wood or gold, depending...and this economy will enable you to spam grenzers until the WC2010 starts...try it out. Again, this is a tip for online play.

Now, this is one of my fav civs for treaty games. Good collectors of wood and food. Well this is only a small guide, but basically it involves fur trading, all the wood cards and Inhabers. Now I have read in this thread that Inhabers is a useless card, now after some tests I will explain why it is so useful, and as a matter of fact its NECESSARY. You should be easily reaching the 3000+ score with Austria in NR40 game, and having around 60k or more resources in each category.

PROS

Huge eco, again, if you wait to have 99 villies, before aging to IV, you can reach an eco of 120+ villies. Nice. Now the trick, is to send fur trade quiter earlier than other civ, I would say between Min 28-30. This will give around 60k gold, more or less, more than enough for a long game with Austria.

Inhabers, well, the key to Austria´s military power is the Grenzers/Pandour. With a backing of Line Infantry for the Cav. Now Grenzers cost 50 wood, and 50 food. With Inhabers, they cost 75 food and 25 wood. Much more affordable, and specially in these games, where instant grenzer cloning is not only a must, but a necessity. Also, since you need wood and food to age up, and you are already there collecting it, you dont waste time in transition. Another thing, is if you plan to use natives, and therefore you need wood, another reason to have inhabers right there. Gold? As I mentioned before, Fur Trade should handle it.

Grenzer Cloning - Enough said

Natives - Have you played against somebody using Austria in Reservations MAP? Its devastating. Austria could only have the cards for grenzers + economic, and fill the rest with their natives cards. 2 Cards that reduce cost, HP and Atack bonus, training time, higher amount of natives, champion level, etc...This is the substitute for your line infantry. They will be stronger, faster and in greater number than your enemies. Plus you are already collecting the wood and food. And with all those cards, they are not that expensive.

Cheap units

CONS:

Poor Walling. Poor Tower. Yes, the towers are nice, and have nice bonuses, but are not as strong as you think. besides, since when in a treaty game are fortifications important? Walling is more than forts, at least for me in these kind of games.

Military versatility: Of course you have other units, Hussar, Line Infantry, etc...but they are not instant and kinda decent. If the enemy forces you to switch your armed forces, you will be in trouble.

I believe Austria was designed to be played as boom turtle in a rush game, and quite offensive in a treaty game, therefore, is kinda hard to make that transition in tactics.

Avoid using maps with poor wood resources, like desert maps, and so on.
Reservations is good, Black Forrest great.

If you dont have Inhabers card, say goodbye to grenzer cloning, your wood will vanish in 10 min.

You have done quite some writing today? How are your fingers.

Actually, it was an on line battle. My team mate took care of the defence in the meantime.

I was a bit surprised over how well it worked. Since his army were over at the other side of the map and I had sneaked the petards past on the edge, he didn't have time to stop them. Pretty much all his economical buildings blew up, and so did most of his military ones. Which of course severely weakened him. It was a long shot, but it worked with a bit of luck. ^^

Last night after a failed attempt to play online, mainly because the adsl line was down in the whole city for some reason, I made some futher tests on some civ to see if there was a hidden potential there. And today, I thought it would be nice to share my findings. In some civs I was kinda disappointed (Italians) and in others gladly surprised, like Swiss and Austria.

And yes, fingers hurt, ....need some rest....tonight might be a good night for a battle, lol!!!
